Front Tooth Implants

What are Dental Implants?

The advent of dental implants make restoration of an extracted tooth appear aesthetically appealing. It is a device, usually made up of titanium, implanted to the jawbone. Since it mimics the appearance of a natural tooth, it is the treatment of choice in replacing an extracted front tooth.

What is Front Tooth Implant?

A front tooth implant is a method of replacing a missing front tooth using titanium screws buried to the jawbone with a front tooth crown attached to the implant. The goal of the front tooth implant restoration is to simulate the appearance of a natural tooth.

Why would I need to replace a missing front tooth?

The front tooth is usually lost due to trauma, accident or improper oral care. Losing one or more front tooth can spoil your overall appearance.

Contrary to a missing back tooth, most patients have an emotional response regarding a missing front tooth. A missing front tooth affects one’s self-esteem which makes it difficult for someone to smile widely and communicate with another person.

Front tooth plays a vital role in speech. The ‘TH’ sound is produced when the tongue touches the back part of a front tooth while the ‘F’ and ‘V’ sounds are produced when the lower lip is pressed to the upper front tooth.

Can everyone have a front tooth implant?

Am I a candidate

Almost everyone, as long as you are generally healthy, can have a front tooth implant made. Certain medical conditions such as blood problems, cancer or uncontrolled diabetes can interfere with the fusion of a front tooth implant to the bone and may not be advisable to undergo the procedure. Therefore, it is crucial that you inform the dentist about your medical health.

Benefits of Front Tooth Implant

Benefits of replacement

It is important to replace any missing tooth for many reasons, to restore a full smile, for aesthetic reasons, but for a front tooth especially it is vital to replace the tooth for many other reasons.  The front teeth are vital for speaking, pronouncing words properly, supporting the lip and more:

  • Improved appearance. Front tooth implant mimics how a natural tooth appears and matches the shade of your other front teeth.
  • Improved speech. There’s confidence in speaking since there’s no fear of something getting displaced out of the mouth like dentures.
  • Full lip support. Loss of one or more front teeth makes the lip look sunken. Placement of front tooth implants preserves the bone that supports the lips.
  • Much more easy to maintain. In the long term, root tooth implants are easier to clean than bridges.
  • Preservation of adjacent front teeth. Placement of a single front tooth implant does not require removal of tooth structures to adjacent front teeth.
  • 99% Success Rate. Front tooth implant guarantees a long-term solution to missing front tooth.

After Effects & Aftercare

Possible Discomfort?

Expect to experience a little discomfort after surgical procedures. It is normal and should subside after 48 hours. Painkillers are prescribed to ease discomfort. Remember, swelling is a natural response of the body to promote healing. You may opt to apply an ice bag for 10 minutes every hour for 24 hours at the surgical side.

Hygiene is vital

It is important that you take care of your front tooth implants just like your own natural teeth. Practice good oral hygiene at home by brushing and flossing regularly. Avoid using a high-abrasive toothbrush.

Visit the dentist for your routine dental check-up and cleanings. It requires a special dental instrument to clean the surfaces of the implant which toothbrush bristles cannot reach.

Alternative Treatments

A missing front tooth is conventionally restored with a fixed bridge or a denture.

Even up to date, the most common – but not necessarily the best – option for replacing a front tooth is a fixed bridge. It consists of removing healthy tooth structures on either side of the missing front tooth. Removal of tooth structure is irreversible and may increase the risk of the adjacent teeth to decay and gum disease. Moreover, there is no bone growth stimulation which can cause the gums to recede. A space between the receded gums and artificial front tooth restoration (pontic) may also appear over time.

Additionally, a denture might be a more affordable option, but it needs to be replaced after a few years making it costly as well. Also, it is important to note that dentures stimulate bone loss instead of bone growth, so with a denture you will gradually loose the bone mass around the missing teeth.  Dental Implants are the best solution in most cases.

A recent study reported over a 5-year period studying 45 single-tooth implants, a 97.7% implant survival rate with minimal bone loss was recorded.
